In 2002 a review written by David A. Shafritz and Mariana D. Dabeva with impressive headline "Liver Stem/Progenitor Cells and their Transplantation: from Fantasy to Reality as We Enter the New Millennium" was published in The Einstein Quarterly Journal of Biology and Medicine (2002; 19:20-32):

However it had become the reality by 2002 in Russia due to multiple research and clinical works which were started from the discovery of alpha-fetoprotein made by Russian researcher Gary Abelev in 1963. Gary Abelev discovered a new protein which is synthesized by fetal hepatocytes and liver stem cells as well as by cells of hepatocellular carcinoma. This protein was named alpha-fetoprotein.

Hereinafter there is a list of principal research and clinical articles published in Russian in 2006-1963 which had helped the transplantation of liver stem/progenitor cells to become a reality in Russia.
